The Design & Technology Association is dedicated to ensuring high-quality design, engineering, and technology education is being taught in UK schools. We support teachers with training, resources, and industry connections, helping to promote creativity, problem-solving, and the essential skills students need to thrive in tomorrow’s workforce.

Teachers in Residence

One of our most exciting initiatives, Teachers in Residence, gives teachers the chance to step into real workplaces whether it’s a design studio, an engineering firm, or a manufacturing facility. It allows them to step into industry and gain firsthand insights into various job roles and career pathways within a specific sector.

Benefits to Schools

This immersive experience not only helps teachers deepen their understanding of industry practices but also arms them with valuable knowledge to better connect classroom learning with real-world applications. Over three or four days, teachers gain hands-on experience, learning about job roles, industry trends, and the skills students need for future careers. By seeing industry in action, teachers bring fresh knowledge back to the classroom, making learning more relevant and inspiring for students. The programme also builds valuable connections between schools and businesses, creating lasting collaborations that benefit both education and industry.

Benefits to Industry

Teachers in Residence benefits businesses by helping shape a future-ready workforce. By working with teachers, companies can highlight career opportunities, attract talent, and ensure students develop the right skills. Teachers also provide valuable insights into how young people learn, helping businesses refine their approach to recruitment and skills development.

Programme Outline

Typically, the placement would begin with an introduction to your company’s work and ethos. Your team should design the placement in a way that allows the teacher to gain insight into various departments, providing a well-rounded understanding of your organisation.

Teachers appreciate hearing about individual career journeys, educational backgrounds, and the day-to-day responsibilities of different roles.
