The Rise and Rise of AR and VR Technologies

Date: 19th November 2024
Location: Vulcan Works, 34-38, Guildhall Road, Northampton , NN1 1EW

Despite many parts of the UK waking up to snow and ice on the morning of the event, we had a great turnout for our AR & VR Design Simulation and Modelling event, which took place at Vulcan Works, Northampton.

Whilst AR and VR technologies have been the “next big thing” for quite a while now, often the practical applications and uses are limited, whether due to bulky and costly equipment, less-than-progressive-attitudes or other considerations.

This event, (sponsored by Silverstone Park) was led by our Design, Simulation and Modelling Special Interest Group, and explored the practical uses of AR/VR and other visualisation technologies.

We were taken on a journey of discovery, where our experts discussed technology of the future, what is developing now and what it might look like in 10 years’ time. With punchy presentations, and interesting discussions, the day was a huge success.

One of our new members, Mantech Geometrics, commented:

“There was a high level of presentations and it was clear that we had made a good choice to join the Cluster.”

Thank you to our speakers:

  • Dr James Smith, Programme Lead (STEM) at The Open University, gave an overview of the new OpenXR Studios which are nearing completion at the OUs campus in Milton Keynes.
  • Rob Rowsell, Engineering Director at Wirth Research, detailed the work they did on their 2008 LMP1 car where they used VR to get the initial designs right, live imaging overlays during production and AR technology to work with the team and improve their servicing efficiency.
  • Simon Holloway, Commercial Director at Dynisma Motion Generators, told us about how VR & XR provide an immersive experience in Driver in the Loop simulators.
  • Chris Burke, Head of Market Expansion at ARA, shared some his own personal experiences of using AR for marketing purposes.
