Published On: 31 May 2024

Leading business and financial adviser Grant Thornton UK LLP and Teesside University today announced the launch of a new apprenticeship to build sustainability business skills.

Designed for employees in sustainability roles, entrepreneurs interested in growing sustainable businesses and leaders who want to build their understanding of sustainability, the qualification gained is Sustainability Business Specialist MSc (Level 7 apprenticeship).

Through a combination of in-person and online learning, participants will learn about sustainability principles and theories, leading sustainable organisations as well as how to apply sustainability across global operations, service innovation and finance.

Co-designed by Grant Thornton and Teesside University, the 18-month programme of learning is rooted in real-world business experience and offers participants the opportunity to develop future-proof skills in sustainability leadership. The first cohort is planned to start in September.

The £11,000 cost of the programme can be fully funded by Apprenticeship Levy contributions or with 95% Government co-investment.

Grant Thornton and Teesside University will be hosting a roadshow series at various locations across the UK to share insights and more details about the programme.

Justin Rix, Partner and Head of People Advisory at Grant Thornton UK LLP, said:

“In a time where environmental, social and governance (ESG) is a priority, organisations are looking to recruit and upskill employees with the necessary understanding and skills to implement sustainability objectives. This exciting new programme will help organisations discover creative ways of working and build resilience underpinned by the principles of economic stability, social responsibility and environmental sustainability.”

Andrew Bingham, Dean of Teesside University International Business School, said:

“Through our collaboration with Grant Thornton, learners will benefit from an unrivalled educational experience. With each organisation contributing their respective expertise, our partnership harnesses a wealth of knowledge accumulated over many years in the field of sustainability.”

Teesside University, which has campuses in Middlesbrough and London, is one the UK’s leading providers of professional apprenticeships with more than 2,000 apprentices studying over 30 different qualifications, with more courses due to be added to its portfolio in 2004/5.

Jo Burgess, Director of Professional Apprenticeships at Teesside University, said:

“Professional apprenticeships give organisations the opportunity to bring new skills directly into their business to make an immediate impact. ESG is an increasingly important aspect of the modern business world, and by working with Grant Thornton to design this qualification we have ensured that this vital subject is perfectly aligned to the needs of employers.”

Applications are now being accepted and the first cohort of learners will start in September 2024. Interested employers and individuals can find out more by visiting Sustainability Business Specialist Apprenticeship | Teesside University
