The University of Bedfordshire’s Automotive students are conducting an in-depth study on the evolution of Le Mans Prototypes, tracing their development from the 1960s to the modern Le Mans Hypercar class. This research focuses on key aspects such as design evolution, vehicle dynamic performance, and aerodynamic advancements.
As part of this study, the students recently carried out wind tunnel testing on a Ferrari 330P3, an iconic endurance racing car from the 1960s. This analysis provided valuable insights into the aerodynamics of classic Le Mans racers, helping to compare historical engineering approaches with contemporary designs.
Building on these findings, the next phase of testing will take place next week, featuring an open-cockpit Ferrari 330P4. By evaluating its aerodynamic performance, the students aim to deepen their understanding of how open-cockpit and closed-cockpit designs have influenced performance characteristics over time.
This research project is supported by a team of experts, including Professor Jan Domin Executive Dean, Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies and Science at the University of Bedfordshire, Dr Mina Mortazavi, Dr Tahmina Ajmal, Dr Rostand Tayong, Dr Rohitha Weerasinghe, Ian Howe, and Danny Nowlan. Their combined expertise in automotive engineering, aerodynamics, and vehicle dynamics is instrumental in guiding the students through this fascinating exploration of endurance racing innovation.
